A Room That Feels Like It Was Always There

An orangery is what you build when you want more than a conservatory but less upheaval than a full extension. Brick piers and a solid, plastered perimeter ceiling give it the permanence and cosiness of a real room — spotlights in the ceiling, warmth in mid-winter, furniture against proper walls — while the great glazed roof at its centre pours daylight into the middle of the space in a way no ordinary extension can. It's the design our customers most often choose for kitchen-diners and everyday living rooms, from Georgian townhouses in Woodbridge to modern homes in Kesgrave.

Every orangery we build uses the Ultraframe roof system — the UK's market leader, individually engineered to your postcode's wind and snow loads and supplied through Emplas — with its insulated internal pelmet creating that signature plastered ceiling, an optional external cornice concealing the guttering for clean, classical lines, and energy-efficient Profile 22 uPVC frames fitted with A-rated glazed units as standard. You choose a performance glass or polycarbonate roof (compared below), your brickwork to match the house, frame colours, and doors — French, sliding or bifold. If a fully glazed design appeals more, see our Victorian, Gable and Lean-To conservatories, or crown a flat-roof extension with our range of roof lanterns. It's all designed and built by our own team from our Martlesham base, in gardens across Kesgrave, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Felixstowe and throughout Suffolk and Essex.

Every project starts with a free, no-obligation design visit and quotation, and is protected by our 10-year guarantee.

Choose Your Roof

The glazed heart of your orangery can be dressed in performance glass or polycarbonate. Both sit on the same Ultraframe structure with the insulated pelmet — the difference is comfort, quietness and budget. Our consultants will price both for you so you can compare properly.

Our Recommended Option

Ultraframe Performance Glass Roof

Self-cleaning Conservaglass units that work all year round: solar-control coatings bounce summer heat away while low-E layers hold your warmth in winter. Paired with the insulated pelmet's plastered ceiling, it makes the orangery genuinely indistinguishable from a 'proper' room — just far brighter.

GlazingSelf-cleaning Conservaglass, 24–35mm units
Solar controlUp to 81% solar heat rejection
UV protectionUp to 94% (protects furnishings)
StructureUltraframe Classic, engineered to your postcode
InteriorInsulated pelmet with plastered ceiling & spotlights
TintsBlue, neutral, aqua, bronze & clear options
In plain English: cooler in July, warmer in January, quieter in the rain — the finish an orangery deserves.
Our Budget-Friendly Option

Ultraframe Polycarbonate Roof

Modern multiwall polycarbonate is a world away from the thin, noisy sheets of the 1990s — its layered air chambers insulate surprisingly well, it's lightweight, tough, and it trims a meaningful amount off the project cost while keeping the same Ultraframe structure and insulated pelmet interior.

In plain English: the sensible-money option — bright, tough and significantly cheaper, though warmer and noisier than glass in extremes.

Lead Times

Survey to Installation: 10–12 Weeks on Average

Because every orangery is completely made-to-measure and the Ultraframe roof is individually engineered for your postcode, our standard timeline from final survey to the start of installation averages 10 to 12 weeks. Once manufactured, the base, brickwork, build and internal finishing are typically completed within 3 to 4 weeks by our expert fitters.

Please note: This is an estimated indication. If you require your orangery sooner, please discuss this with us during your survey—we will always try to accommodate if possible. Likewise, timelines can occasionally be extended for highly bespoke designs or specialised finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
The roof and the walls. A conservatory is mostly glazed — glass walls under a fully glazed roof — while an orangery combines brick piers or columns and a solid, plastered perimeter ceiling with a large glazed roof area at its centre. Inside, the insulated internal pelmet gives you a proper ceiling around the edge of the room, ready for spotlights and speakers, so an orangery feels like a true extension of the house while still being flooded with light from above. Orangeries typically cost more than an equivalent conservatory because of the extra masonry and structural work, but they add a genuinely room-like space that many owners use as their main kitchen-diner or living area.
Should I choose a glass or polycarbonate roof for my orangery?
We offer both, and for an orangery we would usually steer you towards performance glass. Our glass roofs use self-cleaning Conservaglass, with performance options rejecting up to 81 per cent of solar heat and blocking up to 94 per cent of UV, which keeps the room comfortable all year and is much quieter in rain — fitting for a space designed to feel like a proper room. A polycarbonate roof is lighter and more budget-friendly, and modern multiwall polycarbonate insulates far better than the old single-skin sheets, so it remains a sensible option for a sheltered spot or a tighter budget. We will price both so you can compare, with no pressure either way.
How long does an orangery take from order?
Our current lead time from final survey to the start of installation is 10 to 12 weeks. Every orangery is made to measure and the Ultraframe roof is individually engineered for your exact postcode's wind and snow loads, so after your survey we confirm the design and measurements, place the order, and book your build. On site, the base, brickwork, build and internal finishing typically take three to four weeks depending on size and groundworks.
Do I need planning permission for an orangery in Suffolk?
Usually not. Like conservatories, most orangeries fall under Permitted Development, provided they are single storey, stay within the height and projection limits (broadly, no taller than four metres and not extending beyond the rear wall by more than three metres on an attached house or four metres on a detached house), and don't cover more than half the garden. Listed buildings and conservation areas are different, and because orangeries are often larger and more substantial, Building Regulations approval is more likely to apply than with a small conservatory — the under-30-square-metre exemption requires thermal separation from the house and independent heating controls. Our surveyor deals with this every week and will advise you on your specific property during your free design visit.
Will my orangery be too hot in summer and too cold in winter?
Orangeries are naturally the most temperature-stable glazed extensions because of their construction: the insulated internal pelmet and solid perimeter ceiling hold warmth in winter, the brick piers add thermal mass, and the glazed roof area is smaller than a full conservatory roof. Add the Ultraframe roof's built-in trickle ventilation, performance glass rejecting up to 81 per cent of solar heat, and Profile 22 frames with energy-efficient A-rated glazed units as standard, and you have a room to use comfortably all twelve months. Opening roof vents and integrated blinds can fine-tune things further.
What areas do you build orangeries in?
We are based in Martlesham and build across all surrounding areas including Kesgrave, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Martlesham Heath, Rushmere St Andrew, and throughout Suffolk and Essex. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, call 01473 614 444.
Are your orangeries guaranteed?
Yes. Every orangery comes with our comprehensive 10-year installation guarantee covering the frames, roof and workmanship. The windows and doors within your orangery are certified by us as a FENSA-registered installer, and the Ultraframe roof is individually engineered to your postcode and wind-tested to 130mph, so it is built to shrug off the worst Suffolk weather for decades.

Caroline & James F. • Woodbridge★★★★★

Our orangery has become the heart of the house — we cook, eat and live in it. The plastered ceiling with spotlights makes it feel like it was always part of the home.

David R. • Kesgrave★★★★★

The brickwork match is so good you genuinely can't tell it's an addition. Superb project management from base to final plaster, and it finished on the week they promised.

Helen P. • Ipswich★★★★★

Honest advice throughout — they talked us through glass versus polycarbonate with no pressure and even suggested where we could save. The finished room is stunning.

Mike & Sandra T. • Felixstowe★★★★★

Cannot recommend Homestyle enough. Warm on Christmas morning, cool in the July heatwave, and not a single leak through two coastal winters.
